The Apple Watch companion is deliberately focused on glanceable upcoming information and very fast capture. It is not a miniature version of the iPhone app.
What the Watch can do
See what is coming up
On the Watch home screen, Next up shows privacy-safe upcoming entries. An entry can show:
- the recipient’s display name;
- the Occasion name;
- how soon it occurs;
- a simple readiness state such as Ready, Ideas saved or Needs attention.
Tap a Next up entry to see a limited Occasion summary. That summary can show the recipient, Occasion, date and readiness and offers Speak an idea.
It deliberately says Gift details stay on iPhone.
Speak an Idea
- Open The Gift Journal on Apple Watch.
- Under Remember, tap Speak an idea.
- Choose Who is it for? from the small Person list supplied by the iPhone snapshot.
- Dictate the Idea using Apple’s Watch text/dictation interface.
- Accept the dictation.
- The capture is placed into the durable Watch outbox and returned to the canonical journal on iPhone/Mac.
Speak a Hint
- Open The Gift Journal on Watch.
- Under Remember, tap Speak a hint.
- Choose Who mentioned it?.
- Dictate the Hint.
- Accept it.
- The capture is queued/sent back to the canonical journal.
Add an Idea from a Next up Occasion
- Open a Next up entry.
- Review the limited Occasion summary.
- Tap Speak an idea.
- Dictate the Idea.
- The capture retains the known Person and Occasion context.
Continue from iPhone
On iPhone, Continue on Apple Watch can be started from a Person or an Occasion plan.
- On iPhone, open the Person or Occasion.
- Choose Continue on Apple Watch.
- If an Occasion contains several People, choose the Person you want to prepare.
- The iPhone sends the lightweight destination immediately when the Watch is reachable or queues the newest destination when it is not.
- Open The Gift Journal on Watch.
- Open the From iPhone card.
- Choose Speak an idea or Speak a hint.
For an Idea, the prepared Occasion context can be retained. A Hint remains Person-scoped.
The iPhone does not remotely force-launch the Watch app.
Receive reminder notifications
Gift Journal reminders use Apple’s normal notification routing. When the iPhone is locked/asleep and the Watch is the appropriate active device, the reminder can appear on Watch. Long-look presentation and the relevant Open behaviour follow Apple’s notification model.
What the Watch does not do
The Watch does not currently provide:
- a full Contacts browser;
- a full People directory with Person profile/detail editing;
- Contact import;
- Person photo/profile editing;
- full Occasion creation or editing;
- adding/removing People from an Occasion;
- detailed Gift browsing/editing;
- Gift photos, shopping links, prices, notes or fulfilment detail screens;
- Wishlist browsing/editing;
- budget management;
- protected-item browsing/unlocking;
- selective sharing;
- app-to-app recommendation import;
- backup, restore or Portable Journal Export;
- Print/PDF/CSV;
- Settings administration or purchase management.
The Person names used by Speak an idea / Speak a hint are a compact capture picker delivered from the iPhone snapshot. They should not be described as full Contacts or People support.
Likewise, a Next up entry may be opened for a compact Occasion/readiness summary, but this is not the full Occasion plan/editor available on iPhone/iPad/Mac.
If a capture is waiting for iPhone
The Watch can show a message such as 1 capture waiting for iPhone. Keep the devices paired/connected and open the companion apps as necessary. The capture outbox is designed to survive temporary disconnection rather than requiring you to dictate the thought again immediately.
