Protect an item
Protection is an additional privacy boundary for selected Gifts, Hints and Wishlist items.
When an item is protected:
- its private content is redacted while locked;
- opening/editing it requires Face ID, Touch ID or device authentication as available;
- search and other surfaces should not expose locked content;
- widgets/Watch/notifications do not publish protected private content;
- ordinary reports/exports do not silently include it;
- whole-Wishlist sharing excludes protected items by default.
Unlock a protected item
- Select the redacted Protected item.
- Choose Unlock item or perform the protected action.
- Authenticate with the Apple device authentication flow.
- Use the item normally while that authorised access is valid.
When the record is deliberately re-locked/protected again or the app loses the relevant authenticated state, the UI returns to its redacted presentation and authentication is required again.
Portable Journal Export and protected items
Portable Journal Export excludes protected Gifts, Hints and Wishlist items by default. To include them:
- Open Settings → Portable journal.
- Turn on Include protected items.
- Choose Export portable journal….
- Authenticate.
- Complete the export.
Cancel authentication and the protected export must not proceed.
